Whilst the big Belgian stopper would have done little to effect the ratchet job Jose Mourinho’s side did on pace-setters Chelsea this weekend, the Blue’s were never-the-less reeling upon hearing about Thibaut Courtois’ untimely injury prior to their ginormous encounter against Manchester United.
Whilst little is known as to how the keeper ended up crocked on the eve of such a big match, the Telegraph seems to think that the injury was sustained in rather embarrassing fashion.
Filming a PR piece in conjunction with the NBA for the club earlier in the week, joining in with a hooped theme jolly alongside fellow colleagues, Asmir Begovic – a player who finally got an EPL start against United due to his absence – Nemanja Matic, Marcos Alonso and Nathan Ake, it’s believed Courtois landed rather awkwardly when catching a basketball.
Asked after the United defeat about his number one’s absence, manager Conte refused to give the exact reasons.
“I think after a defeat it’s not right to go into this situation. Courtois had an injury during the week and then for this reason he wasn’t available.
No doubt the Italian would have been fuming given that one of the greatest keepers in the world wouldn’t be able for selection for such a dumb reason.
Further to the Belgium international’s frustrations, Courtois is also likely to miss Chelsea’s impending FA Cup semi against Spurs next weekend, a fixture all the more intriguing given that their rivals are now dangerously close in the title stakes.
