Chelsea Should Pounce on Chance to Sign Valencia’s Joao Cancelo

After the departure of long-time defender Branislav Ivanovic, Premier League stalwarts Chelsea are believed to have signaled their intention to sign Valencia’s talented right-back Joao Cancelo in the summer.

The 22-year-old Cancelo has been in phenomenal form for Los Che this season. Indeed, he has been impressive in his 22 appearances for the club so far, exhibiting commendable dribbling skills coupled with solid defensive capabilities – attracting the attention of Chelsea manager Antonio Conte.

Chelsea are without a natural right-back in their ranks and a signing of a player in that position is certainly a priority. True enough, according to Yahoo Sport, the Italian tactician has made the Portuguese born defender one of his targets for the summer transfer window, in an effort to bolster his squad ahead of next season.

Valencia, for their part, would unlikely let their promising young wing-back go for cheap, and will probably ask at least double the £13m they paid for the former starlet to bring him to Spain from previous club Benfica – an asking price Chelsea are willing to meet.

Chelsea would also have to tangle with another heavyweight side in the form of Barcelona. The Azulgrana are also in the running for Cancelo recently and Chelsea will have to outbid the Catalan giants if they are to sign the Portuguese defender.

Regardless, The full international would be a great addition to an already great Chelsea team. Conte is exhibiting his transfer savvy by gunning for the player, who is a talented right-back with potential.

At 22, Cancelo is already proving himself to be a star and Conte would be remiss not to see the deal for the player through. After all, the addition of a natural right-back in their ranks would definitely complete the team at every department, with other positions already solid and steady.

Cancelo is a stark contrast to Ivanovic in that the Portuguese is known for his defensive work rate and ability to hold the ball – attributes the latter was found to be lacking in his troubled final season at Stamford Bridge.

If Conte does manage to bring in Cancelo, then Chelsea may well look forward to another successful spell come next season.

Cancelo’s contract with Valencia sees him tied at the Mestalla until 2021.
